What is Alphabit?
An app that teaches children aged 3 to 5 the sounds of the English alphabet — phonics, the way British nurseries and reception classes do it — with Bit, a friendly mascot who says every task out loud. Nothing needs reading and nobody can lose.
Does it need an account or the internet?
No. Alphabit works without an account and offline.
Are there ads or purchases?
No. The app is free: no ads and no in-app purchases.
What will my child learn?
The sound of each of the 26 letters (lowercase first, “q” as “qu”), in seven small groups starting with s, a, t, p; hearing the first sound of a word; tracing letters with a finger; and sorting pictures by their first sound. Each lesson takes about three minutes and ends with a sticker.
Why do the letters have sounds, not names?
British nurseries teach the sound a letter makes (“s says sss”) before its name, because sounds are what children need to start reading. Letter names and capital letters may come in a later update.
What happens if my child taps the wrong answer?
Nothing bad. The tile wobbles and Bit says “Try again!”. After two misses the right answer lights up. There are no timers, scores or lives.
Where is the settings screen?
Tap the lock on the home screen and answer the grown-up question. There you can see which letters are known, open every lesson at once (“Open all lessons”) or start over.
Where is progress stored?
Only on your device. If you delete the app, the progress goes with it. To start over: the grown-ups' corner → “Start over”.
Whose voice is it?
Bit's voice is generated by AI in advance, in British English, and stored in the app as audio files.
Is Alphabit suitable for young children?
Yes. There are no ads, chats or external links, the grown-ups' corner sits behind a parental question, and we collect no data at all — see the privacy policy.
